U-1: FIQH AL- ḤADĪTH AND "BAZL AL-MAJHŪD": THE STYLE OF MAULĀNA KHALĪL AḤMAD SAHĀRANPURĪ’SSPECIAL STUDY

Abstract

Scholars of Ḥadīth have divided it into two parts: Isnād (chain of narrators) and Matn (text of the Prophetical Narration). Then, these two parts lead to discussions in two branches; the knowledge related to the chain of narrators is called "‘Ilm al-Riwāyah," while the knowledge related to the text of the ḥadīth is termed "‘Ilm al-Dirāyah.". An important branch of ‘Ilm al-Dirāyah is "Fiqh al- Ḥadīth." Fiqh al- Ḥadīth serves as a means to understand the accurate interpretation and depth of the meanings of Hadith. It involves extracting legal rulings, elucidating the reasons behind those rulings, reconciling conflicting narrations, comparing and contrasting them, determining preferences, abrogation, and explaining the context of peculiar hadiths. Fiqh al- Ḥadīth has been the most favored art among the scholars and commentators of hadith, providing them with insights that they have been benefiting from since ancient times. In the utilization of Fiqh al- Ḥadīth, commentators on hadith have developed their own distinct styles. Among the commentators on hadith in the Indian subcontinent, Maulāna Khalīl Aḥmad Sahāranpurī stands out. He wrote a commentary on Sunan Abī Daw’ūd titled " Bazl al-Majhūd fi Ḥall Sunan Abī Daw’ūd," which has been published in fourteen volumes by Dār al-Bashā’er al-Islāmiyyah in Beirut. Maulāna Sahāranpurī’s mentioned commentary on Fiqh al- Ḥadīth is a comprehensive compilation that serves as a valuable resource. In the following lines, an attempt will be made to highlight Maulāna Khalīl Aḥmad Sahāranpurī’s methodology and approach in Fiqh al-Ḥadīth with a focus on presenting it as a clear demonstration.
